mermay??

So its almost half way through may and I have (kind of) failed mermay. For those who don’t know, mermay is this challenge that art communities on various social media sites do, where you draw mermaids every day in may. Yeah. Thats it. Just mermaids. and yet…I didn’t do mermaids -_-.

As I have recently acquired a new drawing tablet I’m having to relearn to draw digitally and it is HARD, along with barely knowing how to draw mermaids I made the decision to still do a digital drawing (no matter how bad) every day in May, just not mermaids. So far so good! I’ve missed a day as I’ve been sick, but I’m keeping up with it as much as possible! The works aren’t very good when comparing to my traditional art, but I’m slowly getting better…slooowwwlllyyyy…

Here’s the first piece I did of Winry Rockbell from Fullmetal Alchemist. (and yes I made her buff) There’s many things that I don’t like about this piece but I’m going to ignore them because bashing your own artwork for no reason is NEVER good.

Second (stevonnie from steven universe) third (uraraka from boku no hero academia) and forth (pidge gunderson from voltron) These were a bit of an experience as I was learning how to use the equipment, but none of them were any “good” (or at least in my eyes)

So I ditched the mermaids and started drawing half body characters instead. This is L (deathnote) Look at this improvement! I feel like I jumped ahead immediately after ditching the mermaids. after this piece I decided to sketch traditionally, scan it into my computer and then do the lineart digitally, which helped SO much.

Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist) I drew this traditionally first and it worked wonders. I’m actually pretty proud of this piece. I spent a lot of time on the sketch and wanted to speed things up a bit so after this piece I spent a little less time on each of the sketches. This piece is probably my most complex one I have done so far.

My fave lesbeans Daphne and Velma (Scooby Doo) These headshots were a lot of fun to doodle as I could spend more time on the facial features and not worry about the body. I really want to do more of these, hopefully the whole scooby gang!

Ugh, okay. Haku (Spirited Away) I rushed through the first one and reallllyyy wanted to re do it, so I did and think it looks MUCH better, although the skin colour is really grey in the second on for some reason? I need to go back and fix that up :/

And there ya go. My “mer”mays (as there not all mermaids) I’m slowly but surely improving and I’ll do an update at the end of the month on how I went and my progress!

Keep sketching,

Rhapsody
